John Smith 400 ProjectShallop Museum Tour: Prior to
embarking on the reenactment of John Smith's 1608 Chesapeake Voyage,
a reproduction of John Smith's shallop will travel to eight museums
in Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia. Accompanied by
an educational exhibit that illustrates the world of the early 17th
century Chesapeake, these museum visits are an excellent opportunity
to view the shallop up-close before it sets off on its epic voyage
in 2007. Capt.
John Smith 400 ProjectShallop Reenactment Voyage:
In the summer of 2007 a crew of modern-day explorers, historians,
naturalists and educators will endeavor to retrace Captain John Smith's
incredible 1608 expedition. Traveling in a 28-foot reproduction of
Smith's shallop, and living much as Smith and his men did 400 years
ago, the shallop and her crew will spend 121-days voyaging to the
headwaters of almost every tributary of the Chesapeake Bay. At more
than 20 points along the route, the shallop and her crew will stop
for public exhibitions so that people from all around the region
can learn about this important episode in the history of the Chesapeake. Jamestown
2007Journey Up the James: Take a step back in time
as the replica Godspeed sails from the Chesapeake Bay up the James
River re-creating parts of the original route sailed almost 400 years
ago. Come aboard as she docks and enjoy the festivities, music, art
and cultural activities planned by communities along the river and
bay as Virginia Beach and cities throughout Hampton Roads showcase
their community's unique heritage. Jamestown
2007The World of 1607: A special exhibition at Jamestown
Settlement theater and special exhibition building, places America’s
first permanent English colony in a global context, portraying a
larger world of discovery, strife, expansion, innovation, artistic
expression and cultural exchange. Be
a part of the opening in the Spring 2007 when major artifacts from
collections around the world are placed on display, including a 15th-century
copy of Magna Carta and a 16th-century African ivory carving that
is the first artifact of its type to be incorporated into a European
museum collection. Jamestown
2007America's Anniversary: Virginia is having the
biggest party of the new century and you're invited! America's Anniversary
Weekend will mark the 400th anniversary of our nation's birthplace.

Sojourn 2007: The Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay's
17th annual Susquehanna Sojourn will close its most recent five- year
voyage to the
Bay. The Sojourn started
in
Cooperstown
in
2002,
in Nanticoke in 2003, Sayre in 2004, Sherburne and Keating in 2005
and Berwick in 2006. In 2007, the Sojourn will complete the final segment
in the voyage from Cooperstown to the Chesapeake Bay.
In addition, the Sojourn will help commemorate the 400th anniversary
of the exploration of the Chesapeake Bay by Captain John Smith in his
wooden shallop, meeting the 1607 era reconstructed shallop
(see Capt. John Smith 400 Project above) and
its 14 member, authentically dressed crew as they row up the Susquehanna
to Port Deposit. Festivities
in these lower Susquehanna river towns will center around the explorations
of Captain Smith and the Sojourners will become immersed in the cultural
and historical aspects of his voyage. As the Shallop leaves Port Deposit
the following day, Sojourners will follow it down river to events in
Perryville and Havre de Grace, retracing the path of Smith's original
expedition.
