Shallop's Maiden Sail
Sultana Projects is pleased to report that the John
Smith Shallop went for her very first row and sail April
18, 2007, near the mouth of the James River. In a
moderate breeze the shallop sailed at about 5-knots.
Not bad for the first day!
The shallop is now on her way to Virginia Beach
where she will partake in the Virginia Beach 2007 First
Landing, a reenactment of the first landing of the
Jamestown settlers on the Virginia capes in 1607.
This event will take place on April 26, 2007. Joining
the shallop will be the ships Susan Constant,
Godspeed, and Discovery. The full interactive exhibit
tent will be open to the public at the Park's
Chesapeake Bay Center from 8:30am to 6pm. Pre-
purchased tickets are required for this event. Tickets
must be purchased in advance from 1-800-933-PARK.

Celebrate America's 400th Anniversary
On May 12, 2007 at 10 am - the 400th anniversary of
the founding of Jamestown - Sultana Project's crew of
twelve brave adventurers, naturalists and educators
will board the replica of John Smith's shallop at the
site of the original Jamestown Fort in Virginia.
Traveling solely by oar and sail, the shallop and her
crew will embark on a 121-day reenactment of Smith's
incredible 1608 exploration of the Chesapeake Bay.
Spanning more than 1,700 miles in length and visiting
every major tributary of the Bay, the crew and shallop
will be accompanied by an extensive educational
exhibit at more than twenty scheduled stops
throughout the Bay. Visit www.johnsmith400.org to
learn more about this incredible episode in America's
history and other shallop stops.
Join thousands of Americans who will gather at
Historic Jamestowne, Jamestown Settlement, and
Anniversary Park during the May 11 - 13 event to
commemorate the 1607 founding of the first
permanent English settlement in America.
The White House announced last week that President
George W. Bush will participate in ceremonies
honoring the 400th anniversary of Jamestown on May
13, the final day of America's Anniversary Weekend.

Interactive Adventure for Kids
We now have a new and exciting tool to bring in the
next generation of Bay stewards. National Geographic
Society has launched an interactive on-line game that
follows the adventures of Captain John Smith in the
Chesapeake Bay during America's early 17th century.
