Shallops to race in Annapolis harbor May 3
race
Photograph taken by Raynell Smith, Deltaville Maritime Museum's Director, last August when the Shallops met in Deltaville.

Who's got the right boat?
Watch history in action as three boats, each a unique modern interpretation of the vessel Captain John Smith used to explore the Chesapeake Bay 400 years ago, race around Annapolis Harbor on Saturday, May 3 at high noon. Who got it right? The boat built by the Reedville Fishermen's Museum, Deltaville Maritime Museum, or Sultana Projects in Chestertown?

Hosted by the National Sailing Hall of Fame, the Annapolis Maritime Museum, and the Friends of the John Smith Chesapeake Trail, the race is a feature of the Maryland Maritime Heritage Festival and celebrates Bay sailing history and the creation of the new Capt. John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail. Cummins, Inc. is sponsoring the race. Admission is free; come and enjoy the fun! Which boat are you putting your money on?

MPT
Annapolis screening of film featuring trail and modern adventurers
So what is it like to spend an entire spring and summer in an open 28-foot boat on the Chesapeake Bay?

Bring the whole family down and be one of the first to see On the Trail of Captain John Smith: Rediscovering Chesapeake Bay, a new film created by Maryland Public Television. This film follows the one-of-a-kind trip of twelve modern adventurers who retraced Captain John Smith's 1608 voyage of Chesapeake Bay exploration and inaugurated the new Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail in the summer of 2007. The film will be shown at 8 p.m. on May 3 as part of the Maryland Maritime Heritage Festival. Admission to the hour-long film, shown in the tent next to Fawcett's Boat Supply on Compromise Street, is FREE and popcorn and sodas will be provided. The Friends of the John Smith Chesapeake Trail, The Annapolis Maritime Museum, and the Maryland Maritime Festival are hosting this family-fun event.
buoy redeployment
Buoys redeploy with new messages for the spring

Three more buoys will be deployed this summer near Havre de Grace (Md.), near the mouth of the Rappahannock River off Stingray Point (Va.), and on the Elizabeth River by NAUTICUS Museum (Va.).

The Jamestown, Point Lookout, and Patapsco buoys are all collecting data as we speak. Just in time for the rockfish season starting on Saturday, April 19. Call 877-Buoy-Bay to catch the latest spring seasonal messages.
