Capt. John Smith's map was published in 1612, accompanying a description of the Chesapeake region and Jamestown. Titled A Map of Virginia: With a Description of the Countrey, The Commodoties, People, Government and Religion, the map shows the location of Jamestown, the bay's major rivers, and the Indian towns Smith visited. Crosses on the map marked the boundaries of Smith's personal exploration.The map is oriented with west at the top.
