Treasured Landscapes

Conserving sweeping landscapes along the Chesapeake's Great Rivers-landscapes that evoke a time when John Smith explored the Bay-is a central objective of the Chesapeake Conservancy.

The Conservancy is working with federal, state, local and non-governmental partners to develop and advance a Treasured Landscape Initiative in the Chesapeake Bay watershed.

The purpose of the initiative is to: help prioritize and target conservation of working lands and natural areas; advance new strategies for conservation; and to create a public-private conservation funding partnership that leverages and expands funding available for land conservation and public access.

Chesapeake Treasured Landscapes Initiative Includes:

1) Partners for Chesapeake Treasured Landscapes. The Chesapeake Conservancy is helping to facilitate a partnership among federal, state and local agencies, and non-profit organizations to inform and help to shape a Treasured Landscapes Initiative in the Chesapeake.

2) Research and Policy. The Chesapeake Conservancy will work to develop research and policy recommendations to advance a Chesapeake Treasured Landscape Initiative.

Recently, the Conservancy commissioned the Environmental Law Institute and the National Geographic Society to issue a special report and map that recommended the development of a bold and coordinated strategy for conserving the Chesapeake's treasured landscapes. The report, entitled Conserving Treasured Landscapes in the Chesapeake: A Special Report, bases its findings on the Environmental Law Institute's careful analysis of more than 25 federal and state conservation programs. The map is based on National Geographic's analysis of the Bay and its great rivers.

3) Education and Advocacy. The Chesapeake Conservancy is working to inform policy leaders and others of the benefits of a Treasured Landscapes Initiative and to advocate for strategies and funding that advance it.

Recently, the Conservancy worked with its partners to advocate for the creation of a Chesapeake Treasured Landscapes Initiative and requested from the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives new funding for land conservation and public access for the region.
