Fort Monroe Monument conserves history, creates Bay access

On October 31, 2011 President Obama designated Fort Monroe a National Monument. The effort to have the historic fort named a Monument was a signature project for the Chesapeake Conservancy. The effort had the strong backing of the Virginia Congressional Delegation, Governor Robert McDonnell, and the many state and local leaders and organizations that all worked together to make Fort Monroe and Old Point Comfort the nation's newest National Monument.
